Some simple safety tips for kids Home Alone

  1. Make sure your kids know to trust their gut instinct
  2. If they are worried about answering the door, tell them to call someone and bring the cordless phone to the door with them.
  3. Tell them to yell out “I’ll Get it!” When answering the door when they are home alone
  4. Don’t forget to look through the peephole and size up the situation.
  5. If you have a panic alarm key chain switch, have it ready.

Home Alone Check list

  1. You have a set of house rules posted where kids can read them
  2. Every Family member knows how to call 911
  3. You have a fully stocked first aid kit, and every family member knows where its kept.
  4. You’ve established check in time for when you are away from home. They check in with you, or your check in with them.
  5. You have a well established policy for your kids in regards to cooking or using any heating device when no adults are home.
  6. You have locked up anything in your home that you don’t want your children to be able to touch including, alcohol, medications, self defense weaponry, etc
  7. Your children take the same route home from school everyday and check in with you when they arrive home
  8. Your children have your work numbers, cell numbers, and the number of an at home neighbor or responsible adult who lives in the area.
  9. Your children know how to answer the phone or door (always behave as if someone is present with them and never telling anyone they are home alone)
  10. They know to ask for identification from anyone who knocks on the door
  11. they know they are not go go into the house if there is a sign of forced entry or break in.
  12. You know your kids whereabouts and they know yours
  13. You keep a cell phone with you
  14. Elderly family members have an emergency call button for contacting help if they fall or can’t get to a phone
  15. You keep the walkways and traffic areas in you home clear of extension cords and electrical wires
  16. Runners and resistant rugs are slip resistant
  17. There are grab bars near the tub or toilet.
