The garage is as important as the rest of your house so why don’t we protect it the same as our home?. Burglars have a way of finding out more about a home if its garage has been neglected and offers easy access. As well, it can be a way to alert them to times when you are away, or worse, give them a weak access point to your home for a break in.
Here are a few quick safety tips for protecting the Garage.
Garage Safety Tip 1. Keep an eye on your windows
If your garage has some windows ensure that they are well checked. Make adjustments and install the strongest windows. This may mean getting rid of old wooden windows and replacing them with metallic locking ones. If you must have the wooden window ensure that they are protected with metallic rods. Make the doors as strong as possible and install an alarm so that when a burglar comes in you will be alerted. See our article on
how to install doors and windows
Garage Safety Tip 2. Always lock the windows
This is one that people take so lightly….. until something happens. Most people view that as long as the garage isn’t attached to their home they can leave the doors and the windows open. Big Mistake. Also, If it has an automatic door make sure you disable it and lock it manually if it doesn’t prevent code grabbers from stealing the signal. Most older automatic doors are easy to access this way. Remember that even if you think you just have “Junk” in your garage, this could still be enticing enough to invite a criminal to break in. As the saying goes, one persons junk is another’s treasure.
Garage Safety Tip 3. Install alarm systems in your garage
Attaching a few glass break alarms may be a good idea, since the sound alone will drive away most criminals. As well, you should have motion sensing lights around your garage. For more info, see article: Home Lighting Safety and Security Tips for more info
Garage Safety Tip 4. Take care of other valuable items
Other than your vehicles, ensure that other items that you consider important are kept safe. You may have other tools like lawn mowers, power tools and other things that can be converted to cash easily. These are the things that theives go for first.
