Protect Yourself From Online Fraud

These days it is very common to store information both on your computer and online.

However, as we are share more and more information with each other, the risk of becoming a potential fraud victim becomes increased.

Here’s a quick way to see how many times your data could have been recorded as it “HOPS”  between you and another website.

1)On your computer, click Start, then Run
2) Type “cmd” and click “OK” (or press Enter)
3) Type this in exactly: tracert www.stungunmikes.com
4) Press Enter
Each line represents a hop from you to us, which in most cases, is quite a few.

Before giving out your credit card info to a website, you should check out a few things.

  • First make sure they have 128 bit SSl encryption protection.
  • Check that the web page starts with “https
  • Check out their payment processor.  If they use checkouts with Google, Yahoo Stores, or Paypal, this is a very good sign.
  • Understand who they share “non” credit card data with. Legitimate websites do not sell their customer’s information, but may share it with their payment processor and/ E commerce platform.

How can I tell if a website is secured?

Check for the “Lock” icon in your browser and click on it. When you do this, you are usually given information about the website’s security certificate.

Make sure that the “lock” is not just an image on the website. A common scam is to set up s fake website in an attempt to get information.

If you implement these precautions when shopping online, you will greatly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of online fraud.
