It is a challenge to drive for those people who live in regions that experience the winter. If you are one of the unfortunate people who feels like they are living in the North Pole, you could probably use a few safety measures to put in place to ensure that your driving is safe.
Winter Driving Safety Tip #1.
First you should check the condition of your vehicle before driving during this season. Go for a vehicle servicing and ensure that the battery still holds a full charge, the tires are puncture resistant and working well and can handle slippery conditions like ice, and your headlights are in a good condition; (they will not go off when you are in the idle of nowhere and they are not too old that they don’t provide an adequate field of view.) Of course, make sure the brakes are in a good condition too.
Its a good idea to have spare snow tires ready for the winter season, and have your wheels balanced.
Winter Driving Safety Tip #2
Have a winter kit which usually contains a shovel, sand litter, traction mats, tow belt, compass, warning signs, lighters, reflective vests, booster cables and extra food. This is to ensure comfort in case you are caught in this situation. It also make sense to carry a spare set of warm clothes and electric car blanket with you on the off chance your vehicle breaks down or gets stuck somewhere secluded.
Winter Driving Safety Tip #3
Before leaving your home ensure that all the snow is off your vehicle and off the drive way. Clean your windows, the mirrors and the light to be able to see where you will be driving, but don’t forget to clean the hood, since loose snow can blow at the windshield interfering with your view of the road.
Winter Driving Safety Tip #4
Check the Weather. It is important to watch news and find out how the weather is like so you can plan ahead. If its really bad, you may be able to avoid hassle by taking a cab or car pooling (which sometimes come with special lanes) Just think of how relaxing it will be to cruise by other stuck drivers from the inside of your warm passanger seat while traveling the less clogged car pool lane.
Winter Driving Safety Tip #5
Watch on the other vehicles. Most importantly during the winter season is to warch other vehicles. The likelihood that another driver will make a mistake increases in bad weather and not every driver pays proper heed to the road conditions caused by mother nature.
And of course it goes without saying….
……Don’t speed during winter seasons.
